Finding Helen

Film poster with old photo of lady and baby in a frame. Also on table is vase with white hibiscus. There is a horizontal line of orange and white hibiscus under that. Lower half of page is blue with the words PILI HOU Finding Helen, and movie credits

Oʻahu resident Diane Ako and her family looked for years for their missing matriarch, Helen Maliu, a full Hawaiian woman who vanished one day in 1900 and was never spoken about again. At the time, she was a wife and mother of eight children.

They found out she moved from Honolulu to Kalaupapa, Molokaʻi, where she spent the rest of her life. We follow Diane’s journey to find out why Helen left, and to see where she made a second home. It’s a journey of searching — and a little serendipity — for Diane and family to pili hou — rejoin — with her great-grandmother.
